Cleveland Clinic Children's reading program, Turning Pages, is a joint effort between Child Life and Volunteer Services. It supports language and sound development, and a joy of learning, by means of volunteers reading to, and with, pediatric patients - infants to young adults.
Through Turning Pages, pediatric patients are introduced to holding a brand new book, opening its crisp pages, and admiring the illustrations. Turning Pages themed book parties support literacy through interactive play, games crafts and activities. Children become engaged with a themed book and learn about storytelling and identifying characters. Volunteers support the parties and each child receives a brand new book to keep.
Patients' fondness of reading extends beyond the hospital: Children are encouraged to select a book from the hospital's bookshelves to take home, where they can begin a life-long joy of reading, or add the book to an existing library.
